Project Description:

This project was awarded to Sure Steel in November of 2008.  Sure Steel competed against six companies to provide the DFCM of Utah and Big-D Construction the “best value” for the Value Based Selection of structural steel subcontractors.  Sure Steel provided a turn-key proposal using GEM Buildings as the steel fabricator.  Steel erection is currently in progress for this 1,557 ton 185,000 square foot LEED complex structure.  This project will be certified by the USGBC with a LEED Gold status. Sure Steel has worked closely with suppliers to ensure that all steel documentation required for LEED certification will be provided upon completion.

Schedule:

The building was sequenced into 8 different phases to optimize efficiencies of subcontractors onsite.  This project is located at the University of Utah.  As a result of careful planning, the project has been divided into daily deliveries due to no onsite storage for materials.  These deliveries have been sequenced for erection. GEM Buildings is currently fabricating steel for this project.  500 of the 1,557 tons have been shipped to the job site.  Even with several design delays and over 560 RFI’s resulting in over 40 ASI’s, detailing and fabrication for this project is on schedule.

Quality:

GEM Buildings is a certified AISC fabricator in the category of Complex Structures.  All structural steel fabricated for this project will meet the AISC quality requirements.  Sure Steel will also perform quality audits of materials fabricated.  These audits will involve visiting GEM Buildings’ fabrication facility to verify that materials are fabricated and meet the requirements of the specified shop drawings.

Safety:

Sure Steel currently maintains an EMR rating of 0.75.  This exceptional rating is a result of Sure Steel’s commitment to continually implement safe practices at work.  Like many projects, this project requires special site specific safety unique to others.  Big-D Construction has required each subcontractor to use the THINK safety program.  Sure Steel has taken measures to ensure that this program is implemented for all employees.  With the enforcement of this project specific program, Sure Steel will substantially reduce the risk of injury onsite.
